This funding will support the Government of Kenya (GoK) and target communities in Turkana, West Pokot, and Baringo Counties in preventing resource-based conflict in the framework of building sustainable peace and promoting social cohesion among communities. Extreme climatic conditions in Northwestern Kenya have had devastating effects on the environment and the livelihoods of communities, shifting traditional migration patterns and pushing groups into conflict over scarce resources. These resource-based conflicts, exacerbated by climate change, have led to insecurity, undermining socio-economic development. Still, little is understood about the details of the climate change - migration - conflict nexus, and there is significant space to reduce the issues through community mediation mechanisms, if their capacities to do so are strengthened. To ensure that the GoK strengthens its conflict preventative measures, the hot spots, root causes, existing peace structures and possible solutions for insecurity caused by climate change will be mapped out and consolidated into a framework which will be further mainstreamed into existing peace structures in each target county (Outcome 1). After, to improve resilience to natural resource-based conflict, the programme aims to train key community leaders (women and men) on the issues of natural resource-based conflict and mediation skills so they can contribute to developing and leading community events to promote peace at the community level (Outcome 2). Finally, socio-economic stability in target communities will be enhanced through assistance to diversify livelihood opportunities to prevent over-reliance on limited resources by establishing and implementing Community Assistance Projects (CAPs) that will benefit all the communal groups, in a gender- and age-sensitive manner, to ensure not to leave anyone behind in the community (Outcome 3). Ultimately, the three-pronged approach will lead to strengthened peace mechanisms and a reduction in resource-based conflict in the communities.
