Philippines Viet Nam
Endemic poverty in the Philippines is regularly exacerbated by frequent disasters, as it is one of the world's most disaster-prone countries. Similarly, direct losses to livelihoods due to increasing and more variable temperature and precipitations, as well as rising sea levels, are critical challenges to Viet Nam. Diaspora engagement initiatives have been shown to promote disaster risk reduction and communities' resilience and self-reliance across the humanitarian-development nexus. This presents an opportunity for the Philippines, one of the top migrant-sending countries globally, with remittances reaching over eight per cent of gross domestic product in 2021, and for Viet Nam, which recently ranked among the top 10 remittances-receiving countries in the world. In light of the above, the objective of this project is to contribute to the development of the Philippines and Viet Nam through strengthening diaspora engagement. To do so, the project will work on allowing selected affected communities to access safe shelters through diasporas’ contributions towards greening and environmentally friendly housing solutions in the Philippines. Moreover, the project will support the Government of Viet Nam and the Government of the Philippines to engage more effectively with their diaspora communities.
