Benefiting Member States
Türkiye
The Republic of Türkiye faces significant environmental challenges further exacerbated by climate change, such as droughts, increasing water scarcity, and increased frequency of extreme weather. Türkiye also faces significant migration challenges, including hosting 3.7 million Syrians under temporary protection. As policy issues, these have traditionally been dealt with separately and policy coherence is limited. As Türkiye undertakes climate change policy development to reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2053, greater awareness and a deeper understanding of the interlinkages between climate change and human mobility are required.
Over 12 months, IOM will contribute to the mainstreaming of the migration, environment, and climate change nexus into national policy planning processes in the Republic of Türkiye. The intended outcome is that relevant stakeholders will mainstream migration perspectives in climate change policy development, while also mainstreaming climate change perspectives in migration policy development. This will be achieved through a CD4MM-compliant strategic capacity development agenda, ensuring that national stakeholders in the Republic of Türkiye have an improved understanding of the nexus (Output 1.1) and have access to an improved evidence-base to support inter- and intra-governmental dialogue on the topic, with attention given to gender and status-related vulnerabilities (Output 1.2). Finally, the project will aim to provide direct support to policy development processes to ensure that technical quality in policy inputs is maintained (Output 1.3).
