Limited studies have been conducted to assess the impacts of climate variability and change on international migrants, specifically those accommodated in collective migrant facilities in Serbia. Approximately 1.5 million migrants have transited through Serbia since 2015, and nearly 2,000 migrants are presently accommodated in 15 reception facilities in Serbia. After the closure of the Western Balkan route in 2016, greatly hindering the passage of migrants through Serbian territory, the intensity of migration throughout the region augmented and placed significant pressure on the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration (SCRM) and the SCRM-run migration reception facilities, thus underlining the need to explore more sustainable accommodation solutions.
The proposed project will contribute to the implementation of the National Strategy on Investment Incentives for the Renewal of the National Building Fund of the Republic of Serbia until 2050 and the Law on Energy Efficiency and Rational Usage of Energy, through green renovation at migrant reception centres. The main outcome expected is that relevant stakeholders in the Republic of Serbia adopt green renovation practices at the migration reception centres. Under Output 1.1, a study on the development and promotion of construction plans/designs for the green renovation migration reception centres, a study visit and a meeting on the sustainability of the project outcomes will be conducted. Under Output 1.2, the awareness and capacities of national stakeholders on the migration, environment, and climate change nexus will be strengthened.
