United Republic of Tanzania
The United Republic of Tanzania has collected data on migration since the first census conducted after the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1967. However, the data has varied greatly in quality and quantity over time. Data collection methods, analysis and the use of relevant indicators have not been harmonized, which hampers the ability of policymakers and development practitioners to accurately review changes over time. This lack of harmonization also impedes the country's ability to accurately report on international indicators.
The project's objective aims to contribute to enhancing the capacity of policymakers to effectively use migration-related data and its analysis for decision making and policy implementation. It aims to do so by supporting government counterparts, including the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the Zanzibar Office of the Chief Government Statistician (OCGS) and other relevant stakeholders to responsibly collect, analyze, share and disseminate quality, timely, disaggregated and comparable migration-relevant data (Outcome 1). Key outputs include making available, through developing and publishing, a migration monograph of the 2022 Population and Housing Census (Output 1.1) as well as developing the capacities of government officials and other key stakeholders such as civil society to collect, manage, analyze and disseminate migration data in line with their needs, regional priorities, global commitments in full respect of data protection and privacy (Output 1.2). Additionally, a national level, whole-of-government and whole-of-society coordination mechanism to improve migration data collection, management, sharing, analysis and use, as well as data harmonization will be established (Output 1.3).
