Over time, Fiji has made significant efforts to ensure more consistent governance of migration, ratifying most key migration-related international conventions and transposing them into domestic law. Today, enhancing strategic approaches to harness the development benefits of migration remains key to the promotion of sustainable development in the country: a milestone, in this stance, would be the introduction of an evidenced-based, coherent and comprehensive national migration policy and a related strategy. This project was developed in response to this identified need and aims to make a long-term contribution to facilitating orderly, safe, regular, and responsible migration and human mobility in the island, through the development, via a whole-of-society approach, of a comprehensive national migration policy package. The project will establish a high-level Inter-Agency Steering Committee (IASC) on migration to develop recommendations on migration governance for consultation with the Government. Then, through capacity development and technical assistance, the project will engage directly with officers at ministerial level, civil society organizations, diaspora associations and the Government itself, towards the development and adoption of a gender-sensitive migration governance policy for sustainable development, a migration governance strategy and a related plan of action, aligned with international standards and best practices.
