Lao People’s Democratic Republic
Facilitated by its central positioning within the Greater Mekong Subregion, Lao People’s Democratic Republic has transitioned from primarily a country of origin to a transit and destination country. This shift has coincided with the emergence of various new migration trends, which have in turn impacted cross-cutting issues, presenting both challenges and opportunities. However, the existence and availability of country-specific, timely and interconnected migration data for Lao People's Democratic Republic is limited and poses challenges for the Government to understand the rapidly changing migration flows and address migration challenges and opportunities appropriately.
The project aims to contribute to effective migration governance by enhancing the evidence base for policy development and decision-making, through the development of digital applications and tools for better migration data collection and sharing, taking into account gender concerns. To do this, it will expand the function of the already-existing Inter-Ministerial Technical Working Group to assist in coordination, development and maintenance of an online data-sharing platform, which will integrate and analyse existing migration data disaggregated by sex and other available variables and indicators. Migration-related questions will also be developed and integrated into the 2025 Census to support the collection of disaggregated data. The project is designed on the belief that accurate and timely migration data is critical for making, evaluating and monitoring policy decisions related to a wide range of migration-related topics.
