In recent years, the Government of Uganda has increasingly sought to engage its diaspora and harness their contribution to national development, including through the development of a draft National Diaspora Policy, which was started in 2013. With Uganda’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) on Climate Change nearing completion, it is also an opportune time to harness diaspora resources towards climate action initiatives. This proposal aims to contribute to strengthening diaspora engagement in the socioeconomic development of Uganda, particularly through climate action initiatives (Objective). This project will support the Government of Uganda’s efforts to engage with diaspora communities on socioeconomic development and climate action through the finalization of a National Diaspora Policy (Outcome 1). In order to achieve this Outcome, the project will conduct a gender-sensitive diaspora skills mapping and assessment (Output 1.1). It will add to this evidence base with three study visits to identify best practices regarding engagement with diasporas (Output 1.2). These two outputs will inform the finalization the gender-sensitive National Diaspora Policy and Action Plan (Output 1.3). Following this, the project will target diaspora communities and embassy officials in the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada to develop their capacities in engaging diaspora communities (Outcome 2), particularly through increasing awareness of sustainable development and climate action initiatives (Output 2.1).
