The project will support the National Statistical Office (NSO) in its efforts to incorporate migrants; in particular, migrant workers and their dependents from Myanmar, Cambodia and Lao PDR into the Household Census that the NSO will carry out in 2010. The project specifically helps the NSO establish better census mechanisms for migrants by translating the revised census questionnaires and draft operational guidelines on conducting surveys and training census teams, enumerators and interviewers.
Under the project, two surveys will be carried out in two provinces with large concentrations of migrants to enable the NSO and its enumerators to work in migrant communities and test the questionnaires and interview methods. The survey will help prepare the NSO for the Census to be carried out in 2010. The NSO and IOM have agreed to collaborate by having IOM provide technical support and expertise on survey techniques and outreach strategies in relation to migrant communities in Thailand.
