Islamic Republic of Iran
Human mobility in the Islamic Republic of Iran has been influenced by various factors in recent years, including socio-economic fluctuations and crises in neighbouring countries. It is crucial to understand and manage these complex movements to support evidence-based policy making and implementation. While previous attention has focused on mobility between Iran and Afghanistan, as well as between Iran and Turkey, there is a recognized need to also address internal mobility dynamics on the national agenda.
To address this need, this project aims to enhance migration governance in Iran, by empowering key government entities to address identified gaps through increased awareness and data-driven knowledge. The project has one main outcome and three interrelated outputs. The outcome aims for key national stakeholders to approve and utilize comprehensive and consistent migration indicators to assess Iran's migration governance framework. Additionally, it seeks to facilitate related dialogues through appropriate coordination structures. To achieve this, the initiative will conduct the first Migration Governance Indicators (MGIs) exercise for the country. It will also establish a country-level United Nations Network for Migration (UNNM) to enhance migration-centred engagement between the UN, the government, and the international community. Furthermore, the initiative will focus on capacity development in migration governance, specifically regarding the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM). This initiative will leverage synergies with national stakeholders, promote intra-UN engagement in the country, and facilitate dialogue between the UN system in Iran and the Government (GIRI). It will operate in coordination with the UN Resident Coordinator Office (UNRCO).
