The aim of this project is to carry out an assessment to examine the effects of climate change, droughts and decreasing natural resources amongst mobile populations, specifically pastoralists in the North Eastern and North Rift Valley provinces of Kenya towards proposing a programme to address conflicts over resources such as pasture and water, as well as increased migration to urban areas. This assessment will document current responses and identify policy gaps in the protection of and facilitation for safe internal migration options for vulnerable, mobile populations who are forced to move for a variety of reasons, in particular climate change. In addition to safe migration policies, the assessment will seek to identify options for an establishment of alternative livelihoods based on human security principles and in keeping with the realities of urban livelihoods. Affirmative focus will also be on pastoralist and mobile populations which wish to remain in their traditional areas but require livelihoods support as a part of climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
