Argentina
With 2.3 million international migrants, Argentina is the leading immigration destination in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. Local governments play a significant role in the integration of migrants since cities and provinces are responsible for providing essential services such as education, health, social assistance, and security.
However, as most municipalities do not have dedicated bodies responsible for migration, they present gaps in their technical and operational capacities to implement comprehensive migration governance policies and migrants face an increasing risk of being excluded from local policies and programmes.
The main objective of this project is therefore to contribute to enhanced local migration governance and mainstreaming of migration in local development in Argentina.
In partnership with the National Directorate of Migration, the project will support governments to identify and address potential migration management gaps through the establishment of a certification process.
This process will include: developing local MGI assessments, designing locally tailored indicators on local migration governance, developing gender-sensitive guidelines and training materials, assessing the migration governance capacities of local governments, training key government officials, and designing action plans and monitoring mechanisms to track the progress made thereof. The project will also support local governments in the creation or strengthening of an institutional body dedicated to migration policy and will provide office equipment for those local migration institutions.
