This project supports the Government of the Marshall Islands (GoRMI) in its journey to economic self-reliance through the continuation and further development of the women-led domestic tourism programme called Ao Kapijuknen, which translates to “our home” (originally supported through a Line 1 allocation for a pilot project). In 2024, the country’s unique relationship with the United States of America established through the Compact of Free Association (COFA) is set to end, which the GoRMI has acknowledged as a “major challenge for which we must prepare now.” With approximately 50 per cent of the government budget funded from external sources over the past decade, equivalent to 35 per cent of GDP, the RMI has much work to be done to become self-reliant. Building off the success of the pilot IOM Development Fund project, the next phase of the project will focus on addressing lessons learned and insights gained to build the capacity of the GoRMI to take full ownership over the programme while also continuing to support and provide funding, training and capacity development to women-led businesses and entrepreneurs through the programme (Outcome 1). Ultimately, the project will support the sustainability of the programme, contributing to the diversification of livelihoods and long-term economic self-reliance in the Marshall Islands.
