Climate change and environmental degradation are affecting living standards in The Gambia and driving migration. The seven months dry season coupled with a general downward trend in total annual rainfall (30% decrease since the 1970s) has generated even harsher conditions, making communities even more vulnerable to wind erosion and bush fires. The frequency and severity of weather phenomena, combined with the existing environmental, social and economic vulnerabilities are causing loss of livelihoods, destabilizing rural societies and fueling rural-urban migration. The project's objective aims to support local authorities, women and youth in communities most affected by climate change exacerbated socio-economic challenges to improve their capacity to minimize adverse drivers. It will achieve this by supporting local governments to use evidence-based strategies to reduce climate change and environmental degradation exacerbated vulnerabilities (Outcome 1). A key output is the development of gender-sensitive community adaptation frameworks for climate change exacerbated socio-economic challenges (Output 1.1). In addition, the project seeks to enhance resilience of the groups most affected by climate-related challenges (Outcome 2). It will achieve this by developing the capacities of community members in designing gender-sensitive and sustainable livelihood activities (Output 2.1) and facilitating implementation of small-scale community-based livelihood projects in targeted communities (Output 2.2).
