Zimbabwe rolls out Migration Crisis Operational Framework (MCOF)
Zimbabwe - The Government of Zimbabwe in collaboration with IOM in Zimbabwe this week convened a two-day workshop to strengthen national capacity in migration management.
The workshop, which was attended by senior government officials, sensitized participants to IOM’s Migration Crisis Operating Framework (MCOF), which was adopted by IOM Member States at the 101st Session of the IOM Council in November 2012.
IOM’s Director of Department of Operations and Emergencies, Mohamed Abdiker, and Director of International Cooperation and Partnerships Jill Helke took part in the workshop.
The MCOF allows IOM to improve and systematize the way it supports Member States and partners to better respond to different migration crises.
Zimbabwe is the first IOM Member State to initiate dialogue on how best to operationalize and roll out the framework.
IOM Zimbabwe staff received specialised training on the MCOF in order to subsequently support its roll out in Zimbabwe and the region.
The rolling out of the MCOF will augment and boost the Government of Zimbabwe’s current responses to mixed migration population movements from the Horn of Africa, East and Great Lakes Region and provision of humanitarian assistance to returned Zimbabwean nationals from South Africa and Botswana.
The workshop also reviewed the global and national preparations for the Second United Nations High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development.
It is noteworthy that the Government of Zimbabwe has committed to establish an inter-ministerial committee on migration to coordinate all migration activities and preparations for the forthcoming High Level Dialogue.
Further, the workshop set the tone for national consultations and deliberation on the inclusion of migration in the post 2015 global development agenda.
The workshop was attended by senior government officials and IOM.
