WHO, IOM Host Asia-Pacific Emergency Response Health Workshop
Emergency health workers from across the Asia-Pacific region are
today meeting in Bangkok to discuss disaster preparedness
partnerships and networking for nursing in emergencies.
The three-day workshop, organized by IOM, was initiated by the
World Health Organization (WHO) as the lead agency in the
Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Global and Asia Pacific
Regional Health Cluster for Emergency Response.
Topics discussed include improved coordination and
collaboration, capacity-building and integration of
nursing/midwifery personnel into coordinated emergency management
and response frameworks, and core activities related to natural and
man-made disasters and emergencies in the Asia-Pacific region.
IOM and WHO signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation
in 1999. In 2005 a follow up agreement focused on joint
collaboration to address and improve the health outcomes of migrant
populations and affected communities in emergency situations.
