The United States’ Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Visits Chad, 01 - 05 April 2014

The United States’ Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) H.E. Ms. Anne C. Richard visited Chad from 01 to 05 April 2014. She was travelling with the newly appointed UNHCR Regional Representative for the Central African Republic (CAR) crisis, Ms. Liz Ahua.

One of the major objectives of Assistant Secretary Richard’s visit to Chad is to witness the situation of more than 101,000 returnees, refugees and other Third Country Nationals (TCNs) who fled the CAR crisis and entered Chad, either with the assistance of the emergency air transportation organized by the Government of Chad (GoC) and IOM (a total of 86 flights, 70 from GoC and 16 from IOM) and arrived in N’Djamena, or with the road convoys organized by the GoC who arrived in southern Chad as of the third week of December 2013.

Additionally, the Assistant Secretary discussed with the GoC, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and IOM about the United States Resettlement Programme in the US (USRP) of refugees from CAR and Sudan (Darfur) in Chad.

During her visit, the Assistant Secretary met with high Chadian government authorities and the humanitarian community, and visited the Doyaba and Chagoua Transit Sites in Southern Chad and N’Djamena respectively, which are hosting tens of thousands of evacuees from CAR.

The Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration is the first donor to financially support IOM Chad’s emergency response to the massive influx of returnees, refugees and TCNs from CAR that started in December 2103.
