UNHCR Gives IOM US$ 64,000 Towards Assisting Chadian Refugees Returning From Cameroon

On 22nd November 2012, IOM and UNHCR, in the presence of Chad’s National Commission for Refugees and Returnees (CNARR) and the WFP, signed an agreement by which UNHCR will provide US$ 63,824 to IOM to enable the Organization lend humanitarian assistance to some 1848 Chadian Refugees returning from Cameroon.

IOM assistance will include registration and profiling of the returnees, the provision of Food and Non Food Items, medical screening and care while they are in IOM transit centre in N’Djamena.

UNHCR will further assist the refugees with transportation costs from N’Djamena to their final destinations.

The Chadian nationals fled Chad in 2008 during the civil war and sought refuge in Cameroon. The Cameroonian government granted them refugee status and resettled them in Maltam and Langui refugee camps in the north of the country.

Following the 20th November, 2012 tripartite agreement between Chad, Cameroon and the UNHCR signed in Yaounde, Cameroon, it was agreed to involve IOM in a voluntary repatriation of the refugees wishing to return to Chad.

“These refugees have been away from Chad for five years. The biggest challenge facing them now is to restart their lives.  IOM is therefore appealing for funds to facilitate their smooth reintegration into their communities” Says Qasim Sufi, IOM Chief of Mission in Chad.
