UN Women, IOM Organize Migration Law Training in Viet Nam

Representatives from various Vietnamese ministries have attended a
training on international migration law, co-organized for the
Government of Viet Nam by UN Women and IOM in Ha Noi.

The 30 participants, mainly from the Department of Overseas
Labour (DOLAB), examined labour migration in the context of
international human rights legal instruments, migrants’
rights and state obligations.

They also looked at mechanisms to protect migrants’ rights
both within Viet Nam and in partnership with countries of
destination.

Up to 80,000 Vietnamese workers travel abroad every year on
various organized labour migration schemes, mainly to the Republic
of Korea, the Middle East, Taiwan and Malaysia.

Despite the many economic benefits of overseas labour migration
to migrants and Vietnamese society, migrant workers, especially the
lower-skilled, can be at risk of exploitation, abuse and
trafficking.

IOM works with DOLAB to promote safer labour migration through a
migrant resource centre and other initiatives. UN Women runs a
project with DOLAB empowering female migrant workers.

A working group on migration and development, chaired by IOM,
has also been established to coordinate migration-related
activities within the UN system in Viet Nam.
