Two New IDP Camps Planned for Rift Valley Province
IOM is working with Kenyan authorities and the Kenya Red Cross to
plan two new sites for internally displaced camps on the outskirts
of Eldoret where thousands of people are currently sheltering
following recent violence in the country.
Approximately 20,000 people are believed to be at Burnt Forest
and 14,000 at Noigam in the environs of Eldoret in Kenya's Rift
Valley Province, although a clear picture of numbers will only
emerge once the displaced are registered.
The decision to establish camps at the two sites followed a
rapid assessment of the areas by the Kenya Red Cross, the District
Commissioner, IOM and various other humanitarian actors.
The new camp at Burnt Forest, about 30 minutes away from
Eldoret, will host 3,000 to 4,000 displaced people in the first
instance with the possibility of having more plots if needed.
Meanwhile, the demarcation for the camp at Noigam in Trans Nzoia
District has begun and it is expected to be ready to host around
6,000 people in the next two days.
Urgent needs apart from shelter include clean water and
sanitation, food, blankets and mosquito nets.
About 7,000 displaced people are already sheltering at the
Showground camp in Eldoret which was established by IOM and the
Kenya Red Cross last week and where the two organizations and
others have been providing essential humanitarian services.
