Training Dominican Immigration Officers on International Law and Human Rights
IOM Santo Domingo is this week organizing a series of training
sessions on international law and human rights for immigration
officers who work mostly with Haitian migrants.
The five sessions will provide more than 150 immigration
officers with theoretical and hands-on exercises on border
management, including best practices related to identity and
migration status checking procedures.
The trainings aim to improve the treatment given to migrants
when entering, transiting or leaving the country, and to prevent
human rights abuses against migrants.
Unofficial estimates place the number of Haitian migrants in the
Dominican Republic at between 500,000 and 800,000. Most of them
work in the agriculture and construction sectors and as domestic
assistants.
The IOM trainings are part of the project "Strengthening
Management Capacity in the Caribbean Region to Enhance National and
Regional Security", funded by the US State Department Office of
Western Hemisphere Affairs.
