Syrian Refugees in Jordan Receive Shoes
Jordan - IOM Jordan started this week the distribution of new shoes to 2069 Syrian families in Azraq refugee camp, in Jordan.
Refugees often arrive in Jordan with only the clothes they have on. Shoes are important for refugees who face the risk of scorpions or spider bites during summer, as well as for winter when temperatures drop drastically.
As much as 8,659 pairs of shoes are distributed by IOM in collaboration with UNHCR and the Norwegian Refugee Council thanks to a United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) financial contribution.
The shoes are distributed to refugees in Azraq camp, which was opened last April to provide extra capacity alongside the Za’atari Camp in Mafraq Governorate and hosts 13,118 refugees.
Thanks as well to the financial support of DFID, IOM has been able to ensure the safe transportation of Syrian refugees from border areas to the camps since January 2013.
Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in July 2012, IOM has transported 450,000 refugees from border areas to camps.
