Côte d’Ivoire - Being a country of origin, transit and destination, Côte d’Ivoire would greatly benefit from enhanced migration management through the development of a holistic National Migration Policy. Although the Ivorian Government has made measurable progress in the field of migration management in recent years, it currently does not possess a national migration policy nor a centralized coordination mechanism to ensure effective national migration management that is adapted to the current context.

In order to fill the abovementioned gaps, the project "Supporting the Development of a National Migration Policy in Côte d’Ivoire", financed by the IOM Development Fund, aims to contribute to Côte d’Ivoire achieving Sustainable Development Goal 10, Target 10.7, to facilitate orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people, through the development of a holistic National Migration Policy. In this respect, the project will seek the endorsement of an action plan to support the implementation of a National Migration Policy by the Ivorian Government.

From 15 to 17 February 2023, IOM Côte d'Ivoire in collaboration with the Ministry of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Diaspora (MAEIAD) and the Directorate General of the Diaspora (DGD) organized a three-day national consultation on migration governance in Abidjan to define the next steps for the development of a National Migration Policy.

The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Director of Cabinet of the MAEIAD and the Director General of the DGD, and brought together ambassadors and diplomatic representatives, members of technical ministries and civil society organizations from Côte d'Ivoire. This workshop was attended by a total of 55 participants.

This event built on consultations held in 2021 and 2022, and was an opportunity to present the latest developments on the action plan for the National Migration Policy. The meeting also allowed to exchange on regional migration governance opportunities regarding Ivorian nationals in North Africa and in the Arab Gulf States, and to identify needs and priorities of national stakeholders in the policymaking process. The importance of mainstreaming gender into migration governance was also a key point of discussion.

The effective creation of an inter-ministerial committee for the harmonization and coordination of actions defined in the action plan of the National Migration Policy was one of main recommendations of this trademark event.
