The Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office (BINUCA) in the Central African Republic (CAR) visits Chad, 08 to 10 January 2014.
The Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office (BINUCA) in the Central African Republic (CAR), H.E.M. General Babakar Gaye visited Chad from 08 to 10 January 2014.
The main objective of the SRSG’s visit to Chad was to attend a special meeting of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) on the situation of the Central African Republic (CAR).
The SRSG and his delegation were welcomed at the N’Djamena International Airport by the IOM Chief of Mission, Dr. Qasim Sufi who was also the Humanitarian/Resident Coordinator (HC/RC) and Designated Officer a.i. in Chad.
The SRSG took the opportunity to also meet with the United Nations Country Team (UNCT). He was briefed by both the HC a.i. and other UNCT Members about the repercussions of the CAR crisis on Chad especially in terms of the massive influx of returnees, CAR claiming nationals and other Third Country Nationals (TCNs) into the country by themselves or with the help of the Government of Chad and IOM through air and road evacuations since the exacerbation of the crisis in December 2013.
On his return to CAR, the SRSG kindly accepted the request of IOM to airlift three IOM Chad Operation, Medical and Liason staff to Bangui to participate in the emergency humanitarian air evacuation operation for both Chadian migrants and other TCNs who have opted to voluntarily return to their home countries.
