Slovakia Aids Earthquake-Affected Nepalis
Nepal - The Slovak Republic today handed over EUR 71,200 worth of humanitarian aid to IOM for earthquake victims in Nepal.
The aid, consisting of tents, basic emergency utensils, power generators and medical supplies, will be distributed in the coming weeks to homeless families in badly affected rural areas by IOM Nepal and its implementing partners.
Slovak Ambassador Zigmund Bertok, who visited the IOM Nepal office on 28 May, said that he hoped that the in-kind donation will contribute to IOM’s efforts to provide shelter and relief items for 53,000 families who lost their houses in the disaster.
The devastating earthquakes which hit Nepal on 25 April and 12 May left over 8,600 people dead and thousands injured. Over half a million houses were destroyed and over 269,000 damaged.
From the onset of the humanitarian relief efforts in Nepal after the earthquake, IOM has been actively involved in providing relief to victims as a consignee for European Union member states.
