Resource Centre Provides Training for Immigration Officers

IOM has opened East Africa's first Training
and Resource Centre to provide comprehensive and up-to-date
training to immigration officials in Uganda.

The centre in Kampala, the first of three to
be opened in East Africa, seeks to improve the ability of
immigration and law enforcement officials to effectively use new
border management technologies and keep up to date with best
practices.

"Transnational crime is becoming increasingly
sophisticated as offenders embrace new technologies," says IOM
chief of mission in Uganda, Kamel Irani. " This training will allow
immigration officials to keep up to speed when it comes to using
state of the art border control equipment to detect fraudulent
travel documents."

Two more centres will be established in Kenya
and Tanzania as part of IOM's Capacity Building In Migration
Management Project (CBMMP).

The CBMMP aims to help Kenya, Tanzania, and
Uganda enhance their ability to efficiently manage migration and
strengthen their migration policies, systems and standards in order
to improve regional security.

US State Department's Bureau of International
Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) fund this
programme.
