Resettlement of Refugees
A group of around 120 Congolese refugees, who may be resettled to
the UK under the Gateway Protection Programme, are being provided
transportation, food and accommodation assistance by IOM while
their cases are being decided upon.
The group come from two camps hosting Congolese refugees in
Northern Zambia.
Working with UNHCR to organize interviews between the refugees
and officials from the UK Home Office in Lusaka over a nine-day
period, IOM is also carrying out medical examinations of the
refugees.
IOM will then provide cultural orientation classes for those who
will be resettled to the UK as well as make final arrangements for
their transport to Britain. The first group are expected to travel
by the end of February while the remainder will travel in two
groups at a later stage.
This is the largest group of refugees to be resettled to the UK
from southern Africa.
