Republic of Korea Backs IOM Aid to Conflict-Displaced in Yemen
Republic of Korea - The Republic of Korea has contributed USD 400,000 to IOM to provide support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other conflict-affected communities in Yemen.
Nearly two years since conflict escalated in Yemen, the situation has continued to deteriorate. Infrastructure continues to be destroyed and basic services disrupted.
In response to the increasing needs for health assistance, IOM has been providing life-saving healthcare through mobile health clinics, to IDPs and other conflict-affected communities.
With the Korean contribution, IOM will operate three mobile health clinics, covering the health needs of an estimated total of 27,000 vulnerable IDPs, returnees and host community members. (They include 8,100 women; 5,400 men and 13,500 children.) These displaced populations live in a variety of shelter arrangements from host families and rented accommodation to open-air settings, unfinished buildings, substandard shelters and schools.
Most public health facilities, especially in rural areas, lack enough resources, medicines, equipment and staff to continue to function. Health facilities still in operation are overwhelmed by the numerous casualties and they struggle to provide emergency medical assistance.
IOM mobile clinics allow access to underserved communities that are suffering from lack of access to basic health care as a consequence of the crisis. Each mobile team consists of one medical doctor, one medical assistant, one nurse and one midwife.
“Thanks to the Korean contribution, IOM will be able to increase its response to the most vulnerable Yemenis in the country. Such support is welcome at a time when winter is affecting most families in Yemen and when the health infrastructure is facing immense pressures with a lack of medical supplies and resources,” said IOM Yemen Chief of Mission Laurent de Boeck.
“Yemen needs more support to further expand its health response and ensure the provision of healthcare services in the most underserved areas,” he added.
As an active member of the Health and Nutrition Clusters, IOM works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Population and other partners, including WHO, WFP, UNICEF and UNFPA. It supports health interventions in various parts of Yemen for third country nationals, IDPs and other conflict-affected people.
