Private Sector Aids Trafficking Victims in Nepal

IOM and the Government of Nepal have enlisted the support of
private businesses to help 200 trafficking victims to regain their
economic independence and reintegrate in their communities.

The Trafficking Risk Reduction in Nepal (TRRIN) project,
financed by the IOM Development Fund, was launched in March 2010
and closes at the end of this month. A two-day lessons-learnt
workshop for stakeholders took place this week in Kathmandu.

The project brought together the government, 11 companies that
provided training, job placement and start up opportunities; NGOs
that provided initial shelter and psychosocial counselling; and
IOM, which was responsible for planning, coordination,
implementation and monitoring.

The private sector was encouraged to participate in the project
through a series of workshops: Corporate Social Responsibility to
Address Human Trafficking, organized jointly with the government
and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and
Industry.

Many of the beneficiaries now live independently, have
successfully re-integrated into society and are supporting their
families with sustainable incomes.
