New IOM Website Focuses on Counter-Trafficking Efforts

A new website focusing on IOM counter-trafficking activities in the
Spanish-speaking countries in the Western Hemisphere has been
launched.

The site "http://www.contralatrata.org" target="_blank" title=
"">www.contralatrata.org contains information on human
trafficking and IOM projects in 17 countries.  It was
developed as a tool for IOM counter-trafficking experts, partners,
media and the general public to readily find information on
activities in the Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas.

The documents available on the site include: regional and
national surveys and research, human trafficking laws and legal
instruments, training material, national action plans to fight
human trafficking, project documents and other related
material.

Although no-one really knows how many people are trafficked each
year across international borders, estimates range from 600,000 to
four million people. The victims are tricked, lured, bought, sold,
and trapped every year by human traffickers.

IOM's counter-trafficking activities over the last dozen years
have substantially increased and continue to target the most
vulnerable group of victims: women and children.  Currently,
IOM is implementing more than 150 counter-trafficking projects in
more than 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Central, Eastern and
Western Europe, and Latin America.

IOM counter-trafficking activities include prevention through
awareness raising, protection and assistance to victims, voluntary
return and reintegration to their countries of origin, and
capacity-building and legislation.
