New IOM Publications Present Migration Realities in Peru
As part of celebrations to commemorate International Migrants Day
(18 December), IOM’s Regional Office in Lima and Peru's
National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI by its
Spanish acronym) this week presented two new studies that highlight
the movements and contributions of Peruvian migrants abroad,
international migrants living in Peru, and the impact of
remittances to the socio economic development of the country.
The authors of the report confirmed that Peru has valuable
information that will contribute to policy decisions to promote the
productive use of remittances and to engage the Peruvian diaspora
for the country’s development.

The report found that an estimated two million Peruvians have
left the country 20 years; the majority are residing in the United
States (32.6 per cent); 16.6 per cent in Spain; 13.5 per cent in
Argentina; and 10 per cent in Italy.
In 2009, the amount of remittances sent to Peru amounted USD
2.378 billion, which accounted for 1.8 per cent of the country's
GDP. These remittances benefited more than three million
family members left behind in Peru.
According to 2007 Census data, 704,746 Peruvian households have
a member of their family living abroad; and it is estimated that
for 60 per cent of families, remittances is the only source of
income.
IOM Lima has been working for the past decade with INEI to
compile vital information and figures on the characteristics and
needs of Peruvian communities abroad and foreigners residing in the
country.
