“Men and Women at the Service of Others” – IOM Participates in the Celebration of the International Humanitarian Day in Chad
Humanitarian workers provide assistance to millions of persons in need around the world independently of who and where they are. International Humanitarian Day marks the celebration of the men and women who assist others worldwide.
The General Assembly of the UN has designated the 19th August as International Humanitarian Day since 2008. However, in 2012 the 19th August was on Eid El-Fitr (The Celebration of the End of the Holy Month of Ramadan). For this reason, in Chad the celebration was postponed to the 22nd of August 2012.
Several activities were organized for International Humanitarian Day in Chad in 2012. These included:
- Ceremony jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Chad in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
- Presentation of movies of major humanitarian interventions from different partners in Chad in CEFOD.
IOM showed the documentary on the Evacuation and Assistance Operation of Chadian Migrants fleeing the Libyan crisis that was prepared by the BBC and funded by ECHO; - Press Conference by the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) members in Chad in the OCHA offices in N’Djamena and Abeche;
- Photo Exhibition at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in N’Djamena;
- Donation of school materials to the children in SOS Village in N’Djamena;
- Joint Radio Programme “Signes de Temps” by the UN, NGOs and the CONSAHDIS that was broadcasted by “Radio National de Tchad” (RNT).
Both United Nations (UN) and Non-UN agencies participated in the celebration of the International Humanitarian Day in N’Djamena, Chad. The following agencies participated in the event: IOM, UNDP, UNICEF, OCHA, “France Volontaires”, CORD, COOPI, CRF, CRT, MSF-F, Malaria No More, Oxfam, BND and CHORA.
