Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 3,156; Deaths at Sea: 234
Switzerland - IOM reports that 3,156 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017, through 18 January. Over three quarters arrived in Italy and the rest in Greece. This compares with 32,317 through the first 18 days of January, 2016.
IOM’s Missing Migrants Project reports 234 estimated deaths at sea, compared with 101 through the first 18 days of 2015. This figure includes the first death at sea in 2017 of a migrant on the Eastern Mediterranean route connecting Turkey to Greece. A man was found on Sunday on Klima Beach on the Greek island of Samos. His identity and nationality are unknown at this time.
