Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals in 2016: 240,884; Deaths: 2,954
Italy - IOM reports an estimated 240,884 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 17 July, arriving mostly in Italy and Greece.
So far this year an estimated 2,954 deaths have been recorded, compared with 1,906 through 30 July last year.
According to official sources in Greece, last month the Greek coastguard had to intervene with search and rescue operations in 58 incidents. Ten suspected smugglers were arrested and 16 boats were seized. Since the beginning of the year, 132 smugglers have been arrested and the coastguard has intervened in nearly 1,000 incidents.
