Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals in 2016: 152,697; Deaths: 456
Greece - IOM estimates that 152,697 refugees and migrants have crossed into Europe since the beginning of the year, the vast majority of them (143,205) having crossed through the Greek islands, while the remaining (9,492) have reached Europe through Italy.
Several hundred more migrants and refugees reportedly have arrived in Spain in 2016; however IOM has yet to receive official notification of those numbers from Spanish authorities. Five migrants reportedly have perished in the waters between Spain and North Africa since January 1.
According to Greek authorities, besides the 143,205 migrants who have crossed into Greece through the blue borders, 1,013 additional Third Country Nationals (TCN) have entered over land borders with Turkey.
Significant arrivals continue to be recorded as more than 4,000 migrants reached the Greek shores between Friday 11/03 to Sunday 13/03. Unofficial data compiled since the first of January 2015 indicate that 996,855 sea-borne migrants and refugees have entered Greece from Turkey during the current emergency, and that the one-million arrival threshold will be reached this week.
Based on data collected by IOM field staff, approximately 13,000 migrants and refugees continue to be at the borderline with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM); an estimated 2,000 additional migrants are located 20km away from the actual border.
A new, deadly route has emerged as of Monday (14/03), as three Afghan nationals drowned at a river crossing into the FYROM. Among those who lost their lives were one pregnant woman, her sister and one unidentified man.
