Leveraging Information Technology to Combat Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is one of the largest and most profitable criminal activities globally, ranking only behind the illegal weapon and drug trades. It violates numerous national and international laws, and has ensnared more than 20 million people around the world. It is key to understand both how technology is being used by traffickers, as well as how it can be used to stop this exploitation. IOM is working with partners Microsoft, AvePoint and USAID to identify innovative means to use technology to stop human trafficking, and the IOM Development Fund is contributing to this initiative by supporting the 6degree’s platform. 6Degree.org is the world’s first crowdfunding portal that offers the public the opportunity to support human trafficking survivors back to self-sufficiency. Recognizing the global potential of the 6Degree.org program as a mechanism to supplement this ongoing effort, the IOM Development Fund is contributing to its success and sustainability. By facilitating carefully planned technological expansion and promotional activities, the IOM Development Fund support will help 6Degree.org to evolve into the Internet’s primary online portal around which charitable individuals - concerned about human trafficking - can mobilize.
