IOM, USAID Support Thai Disaster Preparedness; Build Collective Centre Capacity
IOM has launched a series of trainings on collective centre
coordination and management in collaboration with the Thai
Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), following
the country's worst recorded floods in 2011.
The programme, which begins today and is funded by USAID's
Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), will target 12
provinces and will run through April 2nd. It will include a
half-day orientation for senior government officials and two
four-day trainings for 80 provincial officials and civil society
representatives.
The curriculum will build on lessons learnt in managing
collective centres during the 2011 floods, establish how
participants can contribute to national contingency planning, and
develop action plans for a collective centre response focusing on
coordination, information management, community involvement and
volunteer mobilization.

"During the 2011 floods we witnessed the amazing capacity of
Thais to implement rescue and relief activities, mobilize
volunteers and share information through social media. This
programme will try to complement that capacity with IOM's global
perspective as the agency mandated to coordinate international
interventions in the field of camp coordination and camp management
(CCCM) following natural disasters," said IOM Thailand Chief of
Mission Jeffrey Labovitz, speaking at the programme launch.
At the event, a Thai-language version of the Collective Centre
Guidelines, published by IOM and UNHCR, and an animated infomercial
on the guidelines were launched. They can be downloaded in Thai and
English from:

During the 2011 floods, IOM worked closely with USAID to deliver
essential emergency equipment to the DDPM, including boats, pumps
and generators.
