IOM Uruguay Hosts Training on Migration and Human Rights for South American Officials
Government officials from ten South Americans countries are meeting this week in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, to participate in an IOM-organized training focusing on the human rights of migrants.
More than 22 participants from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela are attending the three-day workshop, which is funded by IOM’s Development Fund.
The event will focus on international law; the principle of non-discrimination; due process and access to justice; access to economic, social and cultural rights for migrants; migrant children; women migrants; and human trafficking.
IOM plans to hold two other workshops in South America later this year to continue to strengthen institutional capacity in the field of migration and human rights. They will also aim to raise awareness among government officials of rights-centered approaches to public policy.
