IOM-UNDP Launch Conflict Prevention Through Community Stabilization Project in Chad

A joint-IOM-UNDP project aimed at reducing causes of conflicts through initiating dialogue among different communities was launched yesterday 29 January, 2013 in the Chadian capital, N’djamena.

The one-year project aims at assisting refugees, IDPs, ex-Libya returnees, ex-combatants, women, youth and local authorities by way of creating mediation mechanisms and building socio-economic infrastructures to facilitate means of livelihood in the communities concerned.

IOM will assist 20 communities in building socio-economic infrastructures that will be solely proposed and implemented by the targeted communities.

IOM has been calling for the provision of stabilization and reintegration assistance to Chadian returnees from Libya and other groups to prevent tensions and clashes over meagre resources.  Chadian returnees from Libya, face many integration challenges upon their return into their communities. These include lack of livelihood opportunities, educational and health infrastructures.

Lack or scarcity of services has led to increased social tensions especially in the north of the country where the majority of returnees have settled.

The joint IOM-UNDP project is implemented under the supervision of the Chadian government through its Mediature de la Republique office.

When completed, it is anticipated that the communities involved will enjoy a strong social community fabric which in turn will support peaceful solutions to local conflicts leading to communal peaceful co-existence.

The project received US$ 2 million funds from UN through its Peace Building Fund.
