Tanzania - IOM will next week organize a two-week Training of Trainers course on border management, counter trafficking, travel document examination and fraud detection for 30 African immigration officers at its African Capacity Building Centre in Moshi, Tanzania.

The frontline officials from Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, who previously took part in a two-month course on Capacity Building for Border Management, are expected to subsequently train colleagues in their respective countries.

The programme, funded by the European Union, Japan, the US and the United Nations, aims to improve migration management in Africa and combat the smuggling of migrants, mainly to South Africa, but also to Europe and North America.

East and Southern Africa face major migration management challenges, including widespread human smuggling, irregular migration and document fraud.

According to an IOM study In Pursuit of the Southern Dream, published in 2009, some 20,000 migrants, mainly from Ethiopia and Somalia in the Horn of Africa, are exploited and abused by smugglers every year en route to South Africa in search of work.
