IOM Takes Delivery of USAID Relief for 20,000 Typhoon-Affected Families in the Philippines

IOM today took delivery of an air cargo of desperately needed water
containers, hygiene kits and soap for victims of the two typhoons
that have struck the northern Philippines in the past three weeks.

The US$350,000 shipment of non-food relief items donated by
USAID's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) will help over
20,000 families displaced by the widespread flooding and
devastation that followed the storms.

IOM will distribute the items in the hardest hit areas, together
with over 20,000 water purification bottles. The bottles, each of
which can supply 560 litres of pure water for a family, will combat
the growing threat of waterborne diseases caused by the
flooding.

IOM has appealed for US$ 8.66 million to provide emergency
shelter and non-food relief items for the victims, and to help the
government to organize evacuation centres and other displacement
sites.

The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), the European
Commission (ECHO), and USAID (OFDA) have already committed nearly
US$2.25 million, which will allow IOM to help some 61,000 families
over the next three months.

Typhoons Ketsana and Parma hit the Philippines in quick
succession of 26th September and 3rd October, bringing chaos to
much of Luzon island, including the capital Manila. Several areas
in the north remain cut off by landslides and over 500 people are
known to have died.

According to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC),
over 4 million people were affected by Ketsana and over 2 million
by Parma. An estimated 350,000 people displaced by the flooding are
now staying in government evacuation centres.
