IOM Supports National Police Reform, Speeds Implementation of Community Policing in Indonesia

IOM has signed a  Memorandum of Understanding with the
Indonesian National Police (INP) to accelerate the implementation
of IOM's INP community policing and human rights programme.

The six-year programme, which is funded by the Royal Netherlands
government, is part of the INP's ongoing reform process, and has
already trained almost 100,000 INP officers throughout
Indonesia.

The training, which is carried out through INP Education and
Training Institutes, aims to help the INP to provide a better
service to the public through a better understanding of people's
rights under the law.

In 2008 and 2009, the programme is expected to focus on the
INP's middle and higher level management.  It will also seek
community input, particularly in monitoring and evaluation of the
programme's impact.

Community policing and human rights is a part of the INP's five
year strategic plan, 2005 – 2009.
