IOM Supports Basic Life Skills of 1, 200 Youth Migrants in Turkey

IOM is to help 1,200 unemployed migrant youths in Antalya, by
organising a series of trainings in basic life skills.

The majority of the youths have come to Antalya from various
regions of Turkey mainly to seek employment. The province of
Antalya has one of the highest rates of net migration in
Turkey.

The aim of the training – which will take place until July
2012 – is to help improve the employment chances of young
people, who have migrated there, by helping them adapt to urban
life.

The "Basic Life Skills Training Programme" comprises four
modules. It seeks to address the essentials of adapting to life in
the city, job seeking and employment opportunities, enhancing
interpersonal communication skills as well as raising awareness on
health care and nutrition.

The training programme began with a training of trainers for 27
job counsellors from the Turkish Employment Agency, ?SKUR, who were
then deployed to different provinces in Turkey. To date, four ?SKUR
job counsellors have been assigned to deliver basic life skills
training to 1,200 young people migrants via 48 training
modules.

The training is being implemented within the framework of the UN
Joint Programme, in cooperation with ?SKUR and several United
Nations Agencies, namely ILO, UNDP and FAO for a three-year period.
This is the first joint project between IOM and its UN partners in
Turkey.
