IOM Supports Andean Community Regional Integration Process
As part of ongoing cooperation between IOM and the Andean Community
(CAN by its Spanish acronym) to strengthen institutional capacity,
support the integration process and promote social and economic
development in CAN member countries -Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and
Peru-, IOM Lima is today training a group of 30 officials charged
with carrying out Community norms on migration in the Andean
sub-region.
Today’s training is part of the IOM-CAN joint project
Supporting the Andean Community Integration Process through the
Implementation of Binding Decisions on Migration Matters, and
the last of four carried out by IOM offices in Bogota, La Paz and
Quito which have successfully trained 120 staff of the ministries
of foreign affairs and labour, the Ombudsman’s Office and
migration officials.
The Project also includes a sub-regional assessment to determine
the level of implementation of CAN migratory norms, and an
information booklet containing CAN’s binding decisions on
migration matters in the four member countries.
The more than 100 million citizens of the Andean Community
benefit from the sub-regional binding migratory norms jointly
adopted by the four member countries.
Some of these benefits include the free movement of CAN citizens
for tourism purposes, and the extension of the same rights enjoyed
by nationals for migrant workers in a member country with an
employment contract.
