IOM signs agreement to strengthen regional migration management in Great Lakes
Democratic Republic of the Congo - IOM in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Economic Community of Great Lakes Countries (CEPGL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen regional migration policies. The CEPGL comprises the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi.
“Better controlled and secure borders will contribute to regional stability, growth and economic integration,” said IOM Chief of Mission in DRC Laurent de Boeck at the signing ceremony, which took place in Gisenyi, Rwanda.
IOM supports CEPGL efforts to promote the free movement of persons, goods, services and capitals in the region. Areas of cooperation specified within the MoU include combating irregular migration and human trafficking, engaging the diaspora of CEPGL member states, and supporting integrated border management.
