IOM Releases First Counter-Trafficking Curricula for Criminal Justice Agencies in Indonesia
IOM has released Indonesia's first training curricula for criminal
justice agencies dealing with cases of human trafficking. The
Eradication of the Criminal Act of Trafficking in Persons comprises
three curricula targeting the Indonesian National Police (INP),
public prosecutors and the judiciary.
The new curricula, which cover the identification and
prosecution of human traffickers, and the protection and
rehabilitation of victims, were developed in close collaboration
with the three agencies and will be used in their national training
academies.
Dr. Supandi, Supreme Justice of Indonesia and Head of the
Judicial Training School in Bogor, welcomed the project and
congratulated IOM on their sector-wide approach, stressing the need
for a coordinated response to combat human trafficking throughout
the Indonesian criminal justice system.
"The curricula are designed to improve inter-agency cooperation
and bring about more successful prosecutions of traffickers. Their
aim is to create sustainable change in Indonesia's criminal justice
system," says IOM Indonesia counter-trafficking programme manager
Cecilia Cantos.
The release corresponds with a new edition of IOM's Guidelines
for the Investigation and Prosecution of Human Trafficking Cases
and the Treatment of Victims during Law Enforcement Proceedings,
which has been updated to include Indonesia's 2007 Law No.21 on the
Eradication of Trafficking in Persons.
The Guidelines have been distributed to over 28,000 members of
the law enforcement sector since their inception in 2005. The
updated manual will continue to play an important role in educating
law enforcement officers in the complexities of human trafficking
and in supporting the on-going development of the sector's
capacities.
To date, IOM Indonesia has assisted 3,476 victims of trafficking
in Indonesia, providing them with shelter, medical and
psychological care, rehabilitation and legal assistance.
