IOM Receives USD 50,000 from OCHA to Assist Flood Victims in Ghana
The IOM mission in Ghana has received an "Emergency Cash Grant"
from the Organization for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
(OCHA) to support the Government of Ghana National Disaster
Management Organization (NADMO) in providing assistance to flood
victims in the country.
The coastal regions of Ghana have been severely affected by
seasonal flooding and the latest reports from NADMO estimate over
40,000 people have been affected. Of those, several thousand were
displaced from their homes and are living in temporary
shelters.
IOM in conjunction with the Inter-Agency Working Group in Ghana
and NADMO, conducted a joint assessment in early July to some of
the areas most affected in order to better respond to the
situation. The assessment identified severe damages in three
principal areas with over 14,000 persons affected, 11 reported
deaths and 540 houses destroyed. Additionally, three primary
bridges were destroyed, impacting the communities' access to
clinics, and some of the schools were also affected.
IOM support for NADMO relief assistance to flood victims is
funded through the "OCHA Emergency Cash Grant". IOM Ghana will work
with NADMO to provide locally procured non-food items (NFIs) and to
distribute them in a timely manner. It will also explore options
for improved shelters for displaced populations and the
mainstreaming of health in the distribution process. The
distribution of NFIs will be done in coordination with NADMO staff
and local partners.
IOM's role in supporting NADMO will help strengthen their
capacity to respond to the emergency needs of persons affected by
the floods.
