IOM Provides Application Imaging Technology to Immigration Department

IOM is providing a USD 750,000 grant to Sri Lanka's Department of
Immigration and Emigration to improve its document management
systems.

The project, which will provide electronic application imaging
technology to replace paper-based systems, is part of the IOM
– Government of Sri Lanka Technical Cooperation on Migration
framework funded by the European Commission and the Australian
Government.

The new system will result in faster and more reliable passport
issuing services, as well as reducing opportunities for fraud and
identity theft in the passport issuance service chain. Its archive
element will also help facilitate speedy investigation and
prosecution in cases of trafficking and smuggling.

P.B.Abeykoon, Controller General of Immigration and Emigration,
welcomed the transfer of the new technology as an important element
of the framework agreement. "Our current document management system
is paper-based and as such it has proven very difficult to ensure
accuracy and efficiency, as well as provide timely service," he
said.
