IOM Mexico Signs Cooperation Agreement with Mexico’s Largest University

México - IOM Mexico has signed a cooperation agreement with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM by its Spanish acronym) that will benefit UNAM Foundation’s fellowship holders, who will be entitled to preferential airfares supported by IOM’s Reduced Air Fares Program.

IOM Chief of Mission in Mexico, Thomas Lothar Weiss, explained that this agreement facilitates the migration process and allow students to get discounts on international airfares when traveling abroad for studying.  "We are pleased to contribute to enhance the capabilities of the new generations in Mexico looking for their success,” he said.

Samuel Martinez, Legal Director of UNAM Foundation, said that this agreement will strengthen inter-agency relationships to provide greater support for Mexican students engaging in studies abroad.

UNAM Foundation benefits nearly 200 fellows per year.  During the school semester (July-December 2014) it benefited 84 students. UNAM is Latin America’s oldest university, and regularly listed in the region’s top ten list of excellence. It has an enrollment of some 370,000 students per semester.

The Reduced Airfare Program looks to facilitate the mobility of nationals living abroad, both professionals and students, through airfare discounts and other benefits, such as discounts for the applicant's direct relatives, as well as granting greater baggage allowances.
