Mali - IOM is continuing to support the Malian Government in responding to the emergency caused by  floods that hit the capital Bamako on the 28th of August which, according to the General Directorate for the Protection of Civilians (DGPC), left 37 dead and affected some 2,133 families or 20,000 people.

Some 55 per cent of the affected families are still living on their land, while 10 per cent of the affected households are now living with host families. The remaining 35 per cent are accommodated in seven schools, which are currently managed by the communes with the support of the central government.  

Ongoing emergency assessments have confirmed that 47 per cent of the affected population are children under 18, some 193 people are suffering from chronic diseases, 35 individuals are disabled and 130 are elderly. The assessments also identified 257 lactating or pregnant women.

As part of the response, IOM has already handed over 500 non-food (NFI) relief kits containing sleeping mats, blankets, mosquito nets and kitchen supplies to the Malian Government to help the worst affected families.

The kits will be distributed by the end of the week by the DGCP and the Mayor’s offices of the two most affected communes.

IOM has this week increased the number of operational teams on the ground and deployed protection staff in affected areas, including a psychologist and a child protection specialist.
